Miss Dixie Monroe is a Shih Tzu with quite a story. She was found in the woods beside a busy D.C. street and taken to the Washington Animal Rescue League. The vet said she was probably stomped on to kill her because all her legs and paws are permanently damaged, yet she survived. She was considered unadoptable because she could not walk, but when her mom met her it was love at first sight. She has had lots of physical therapy and swimming therapy for several years. She has recently been standing up by herself to eat and beginning to walk a little. She has a two wheel cart made especially for her, for her hind legs and with that she can run in the dog park, though she has trouble on the turns. Her favorite thing is Dancing with her mom with her mom holding her on her shoulder. Miss Dixie and her Mom are inspirations, showing what can come from love and belief. Miss Dixie's motto is "Gigglers will rule the world". To see more about Miss Dixie and some videos of her go to her dogster page.
Willow, whose real name is Tough Star Georgia, is a 21 year old thoroughbred mare who lives with me, Nina. When I was little and My Friend Flicka was the book all little girls read, and then pined for the beautiful chestnut mare of their dreams, I was right there dreaming. Who knew one day that dream would materialize in the form of Willow. She is skittish, nutty, spooky as in "There are banshees out there.. I see them... right there by the tree... eeeeekkkkkk, I can't come in cause I have to go too close to the banshees". She is sweet, the cutest ever treat face... bats those eyes and tips her head and says "hey there, a carrot would be nice, two would be nicer" (and her daughter Wirago inherited the sweet treat face). She was the best Mom in the world to Wirago, she loved being a Mom. She showed and won many awards in dressage and even today when she comes trotting across the pasture it takes your breath away. Today she is a brumby, a pasture pet, as free a spirit as she can be, with her best friend Countess and that new girl Margaret. They spend the mornings sunning and rolling, and then on a warm day she has taught them all how to stand in the water tubs and put your whole head to the bottom and whoosh upwards or splash backwards to cool herself off. They stand and paw the water till the tubs are empty and then go to the one in the lower pasture and do the same. Then she will stand and stare at the house till someone comes and refills. She has suffered for two years with chronic absesses on her hind feet but she sweetly lets us wash and dress her wounds twice a day, and though I know they must be painful at times of flareups she can still frolic and trot and gallop like a filly. She is all heart... all heart and a sweet treat face begging for carrots.
Mr D. is an adventurer. He is a mixed breed but has that oriental short hair look, probably from his Mom Raza, who was cat of the month a while back. Mr D. lives in New Zealand. Last year Mr. D went out to play and vanished. His family looked and looked, put up posters, talked to neighbors, covered neighborhoods. For 6 months his Mom looked everywhere, following up every lead, every sighting of an orange cat, never giving up. Finally, she took 3 weeks off from work, bought a big orange cat suit costume that looks remarkably like Mr D, and stood on a street corner in the city holding a huge poster picture of him that said "Looking for Mr D". Well, this caused quite a stir, you don't see this every day. The news media came out and interviewed her in her cat costume and it was all over the news channels. Calls poured in and the family checked every one, till one day a lady called to say there was a stray orange cat under her porch. It was Mr D. - so he was reunited with his cat mom and sister and family and now all are happy again. What a love story! His mom had said to the TV interviewer "he is family" and so he is. We are so happy you are home Mr D. If you want to see more of Mr D go to his page on catster. There you can click on his catster plus photo book to see pictures of his mom in the cat suit holding the sign or click on the My Video Book to see the video of the TV news interview.
